SITKA CONSERVATION SOCIETY

While spending time in Sitka over the summer of 2020, I learned about a local nonprofit that is actually the oldest nonprofit in Alaska, the Sitka Conservation Society, founded in 1967. I had wanted to establish a relationship with an organization that specifically was helping the Tongass National Forest.

I met with Carly Dennis, a policy advocate for SCS. With her I was able to better understand some of the issues the Tongass National Forest is facing today. SCS strives to protect what remains of the old growth forest and to advocate how to better use the alternative resources of the Tongass for more sustainable development. The forest is directly connected to the wellbeing and health of the rivers and ocean. Since wild fish is a huge part of the livelihood and wellbeing of the community, protecting these waters and the land is vital.
